- In 1648 the British captured Jamaica from Spain and took control of San Salvador as well. It became an official British colony in 1784 and a base for British privateers during the Napoleonic wars against France.
- In 1821 Britain granted independence to its colonies in Central America including San Salvador. The island then joined with other Central American countries to form what became known as The Republic of Central America (1823–39).
- After this collapse it returned to its status as an independent country until becoming part of Colombia in 1841; this union lasted until 1886 when it again became an independent republic.
